First make sure the nut holding it on is tight. Boat steering problems require a systematic approach whether the problem be a tight steering wheel a broken or damaged steering cable or a hesitation or hitch in the steering.
Pop the center out of wheel and make sure the shaft is turning with the wheel and no free play there.
Boat steering wheel play adjustment. There is no adjustment for the steering play. I did add some grease to the rack and pinion while I had it loose. I also adjusted my steering wheel to get it centered.
- Turn the wheel back and forth just in the play area. Watch the ram motor end of the cable to see if its moving with the wheel or standing still. If its moving check the linkage from the end of the ram to the motor for loose connections.
Fix if anything is worn or broken. Id say the play youre experiencing is close to normal. 30 to 40 degrees of wheel turn amounts to about 3 to 4 inches of wheel play.
That amounts to about 2 millimeters of motor play. At least that is my estimation from looking at my boat. Just check all linkage to make sure its all tight.
If everything is tight the play may just be from the cable moving in its sheath. The drive should have very little side-to-side freeplay. Have a friend hold the steering wheel tight while you stand behind the boat It should move very little.
If you have excessive movement inspect the area at the top of the Gimbal Ring where the steering shaft passes through the gimbal ring and into the boat. First make sure the nut holding it on is tight. Pop the center out of wheel and make sure the shaft is turning with the wheel and no free play there.
If the wheel was loose the keyway may be beaten out and giving you too much play. If the wheel is tight and the shaft turns with the wheel look at the motor and make sure the cable end moves when you rock the wheel back and forth. If it does find your free play.
Not knowing what steering system you have if it is using a steering cable system from the helm to the drives you should also check for play from the steering wheel back. Have someone move the steering wheel back and forth while you are watching the tiller arms of the drives. If the steering wheel moves and the tiller arms dont or not much there is excessive.
I have the installation instructions but it doesnt say anything about adjustments. Nopeeither slack in helm or cable but usually helm and needs to be replaced if excessive. They all have slop even when new but not sure how many degrees.

If you have a height adjustable steering wheel on Teleflex cable with hydraulic assist there is a for want of a better word a UJ clamp that has 2 screw in bolts. 1 tightens to the stub on the rotary mechanism and the other round the steering stub.
These can work loose and increase play. Make sure to run hydraulic fluid through the hose first. Attach a second hose from the steering cylinder fitting to another container to catch the overflow.
If your boat is small enough you can use one container for the ends of both hoses. Make sure the container has enough extra room for overflow. Turn the wheel back and forth from lock to lock.
When your steering wheel begins to develop more sloppiness than it used to its time to either adjust the steering or replace the cable. Adjusting the steering is more a matter of tightening the junction between your helm and the cable and between the cable and the tilt tube on the motor than it is one of making an adjustment the steering. Is just a further adjustment to the trim tab thats needed.
It scared the living out of me the first time I let go of the wheel and the boat decided to turn 90deg to the right. I was starting to think it was a safety thing that makes the boat turn in circles if the steering wheel goes unmanned ieno driver. I have a tilt steering wheel and thought it might be in the tilt coupler but upon inspection that is not the source.
Everything on the steerer tube seems good. So the play is in the steering box Teleflex no feedback the cable itself or is normal for that setup. My play is a tad under 14 turn of the wheel before I see the motor move.
Manual Wheel Bearing Adjustment Procedures Pre-Adjusted Wheel Bearing Adjustment Procedures The goal of this recommended procedure is to achieve a verifiable wheel bearing end play of 0001 to 0005 025 mm to 127 mm. Have someone watch the steering arm inside the boat and move the drive back and forth JUST the amount of play. If the steering are doesnt move or moves minimally that is the problem. Try torquing the two nuts at the top of the Gimbal Ring.
Well I got a reply back from Bennington engineering and they tell me the play is normal and they recommend that an upgrade to hydraulic steering for all engines 115 hp and above. Hmm I mentioned this to my dealer and they told me the hydraulic steering is prone to leaking I would need to pull the motor etc. And pretty much talked me out of it.
The end of the steering cable cannot be replaced unless i replace the whole cable. Its a solid stainless steel rod with a 38 hole at the end. If i put the pin in just the steering cable it feels like theres very little play and if i put the pin in the steering lever without the cable that feels like its fairly tight.
But when everything is assembled it has slop. Then fully extend the ram by turning the wheel and mark the ram at the edge of the tilt tube. Measure the ram from mark to mark and mark the halfway point between the two marks.
Retract the ram until the midpoint mark is at the edge of the tilt tube align the outboard with the. The wheel is playing see video. Could I reduce it.
I have no manual for the steering system. But what I learned from other discussions here thank you ppl sharing the knowledge that there is a bottle for steering liquid and the pressure can be adjusted to 35 PSI. Could you please point it where is it located in 2855.
The steering wheel seems to have 2 of play and this is really noticeable when doing slow to mid speed always correcting to stay straight basically feels really sloppy my boat only has 70 hrs with a 212 Hamilton would there be a bolt or adjustment screw. Boat steering problems require a systematic approach whether the problem be a tight steering wheel a broken or damaged steering cable or a hesitation or hitch in the steering.
