Normally the fuel system is sealed if the gas cap is loose for example that will cause a check engine light. I think you have a hole somewhere in the tank or filler neck that is causing this. But a hole in the filler tube would leak liquid only if the tank is overfilled up into the tube which shouldnt be done because it can cause liquid fuel to get into the charcoal vapor recovery box also up behind the right rear wheel.
A flooded recovery system could give off fumes leak gas and cause a. About 2 litres on the floor for every 10 litres in the tank. Otherwise no gas smells when driving no leaks after filling.
I pulled the seats out and checked the fuel pump which is fine with no leak. Then I checked under the car while adding petrol slowly and the leak is above the fuel tank somewhere between the filler neck and the main tank. Part of the new install was a new Spectra gas tank.
It has a very slight leak at the the tanks filler neck. It actually seeps from behing the end of the hose where it seats up against the tank. It only does this with over a 12 tank of gas.
That point is exactly where the tank outlet meets the filler neck. Gas smell is mostly at the rear or just beside the gas cap area. Jacked up the van today and saw the leak right away.
It seems to be coming from the lip of the hose coming from the filler neck connecting to the tank itself. At first I thought it was the fuel pump housing crack like. If it happens during refueling the filler neck may have rusted allowing some fuel passing thru it en route to the tank to leak out.

I uncovered the annoying leak in the hard-to-reach fuel vent line from the fuel tank to the filler neck last night. I was originally thinking it was the seal on the fuel level sending unit so I replaced that and took it to the gas station to fill it up and check that everything was ship-shape. The filler neck is fitted on the passenger side at the top of one of the tall sides of the fuel tank.
In order for fuel to fill up evenly on both sides of the fuel tank depressed area VW came up with a somewhat elaborate way of venting the fuel vapor. The system is comprised of a transfer tube assembly three grommets and about a meter or so of 5mm fuel hose. There is also a grommet around where the filler.
I noticed today when i was filling up my gas tank that there was a pretty significant drip coming from what i assumed was the filler neck. Because once i stopped pumping gas the drip stopped. And i was in my work clothes so i didnt want to get underneath and look at it.
Im gonna go out on a limp and assume the filler neck is leaking. I know the right thing to do is to drain the tank drop it wash out the tank with water let it sit in the sun to dry etc and then have it welded again. I read some previous posts that mentioned putting JB weld around the filler neck to stop the leak which I did.
I have been getting the P0456 code for small EVAP leak for about two years. I have paid to have several smoke tests they found no leaks and replaced every component in the EVAP system at least once except for one – the fuel filler neck running from the fuel inlet to the gas tank. I am guessing it has a small leak or two somewhere in the tube.
Turned the key on the ignition to engage the fuel pump. Immediately when I did this fuel starting leaking out of one of the line connectors that plugs into the fuel pump. I then started the truck up and fuel continued to pump out of that leaky connector as expected.
