If playback doesnt. The complete repair for stripped threads is to use a coil-type thread insert. These inserts will give the bolt hole completely new threads which accept the size of the original bolt.
In order to use inserts you must drill the damaged holes slightly larger so that it can take the thread insert. When thread damage does occur in cast iron and steel the most common practice is to drill out the existing threads and tap the hole to accept a larger fastener. In many cases this solves the problem.
When the same size fastener must be used an insert can be installed to. Cut thread. Now you can cut the new thread with the single-cut tap.
To do this place the single-cut tap in the tap wrench and cut by hand into the drilled hole see first picture below. If you have cutting oil on hand you can use it well here. This new thread is used in the next step to accommodate the thread insert.
Mask the Threaded Stud With Electrical Tape Make sure that the tape goes over the part required to take the nut to avoid resin contamination which might block the threads. Take the stud in the gloved hand and slowly rotate whilst pushing it into the resin filled hole. Complete kits are available for resin fixing if you have a lot to do.
Always make sure the bolt and threaded hole are clean and free of debris before installing the bolt. If necessary use a wire brush to clean debris from bolt threads and a tap to free debris from the threaded hole. Make sure all parts being clamped together are properly aligned.
Dont rely on the bolt threading into the hole to align parts. JB Weld is usually a 2 step epoxy that can be used to join things together permanently. Alternatively you can use the stripped thread repair epoxy to fill the hole and tap it afterward.
If you are not worried about being able to remove the bolt later on you can put the JB Weld on the bolt and tighten it down. Each time you unbolt something and put it back together you stand a chance of stripping the threads. A stripped bolt is a simple fix.
Remove it and replace it with a new bolt. Stripped bolt holes however take some creativity to address. You may be tempted to take the close enough approach to the situation.
If you dont fix stripped threads however you wont be able to properly tighten the bolt. The former two would cause the threads of the bolt or screw to grow thinner and therefore not fit properly or tightly in the hole. The latter or the exposure to rust on the other hand would call for rethreading as the rust would cause the threads to be shallower as rust may possibly get thicker as time goes by.
After cleaning and applying a release agent to the bolt put epoxy into the damaged hole and on the bolt. Threading in the bolt will force the epoxy into the existing threads. Once the epoxy cures install new bolts as needed.
For high-torque applications threaded inserts are best. A thread repair kit includes a specially sized drill bit an insert tool and a few. To repair an outside thread like a bolt or stud first ensure it is fixed tightly in place or in a bench vice.
Use a thread pitch gauge to determine which die you need or very carefully match the die to the thread by trialling different ones. Then fit the die into a die handle. Wear of the thread material itself as a result of repeated use.
Thread damage as a result of breaking a fastener or tap in the hole. Oversize Thread Repair Method Sometimes the most straight-forward repair method is to simply drill out the stripped thread and either tap or threadmill the hole for the next larger size. You fill the hole with one of the materials of the kit.
The bolt is coated with a second material a release agent that keeps the bolt from sticking to the filler. The bolt is inserted in to the filled hole. The bolt forms the threads.
Once the filler material hardens the bolt is removed leaving the threads in place. Once the threads are cut you need to clean out the hole. Spray it with compressed air brake cleaner or lubricant to get all the chips out.
Fixing threads on a threaded shaft follows much of the same path. However there are few minor differences. Dies come in cutting and rethreading types.
The threads will be sharp though might have a slight taper to the end and should cut into the plasticaluminum. They are installed at the factory into a blank hole. If you order a new case for those none of the plastic screw holes will be threaded.
Most of the major manufacturers do the same thing - even on most of the aluminum parts.
