I have a few Chryslers from the late 1960s to early 1970s. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 about 10 times to break in your new drum brakes.
The trailer brake should not be activated.
How do you remove drum brakes from a trailer. Replace trailer drum brakes 10000 lb. Brake in which shoes press on the inner surface of the drum. This video shows you how to replace change electric drum brake on a Sundowner horse trailer with two 52K lb.
Dexter axles with 3000 lb. A trailer hub and brake drum should be able to be removed by just sliding off the spindle after the castle nut is removed. The castle nut is located underneath the grease cap.
The trailer brake should not be activated. If the brake is locked that must mean that there is pressure on that wheel cylinder keeping the brake shoes against the brake drum. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws securing the brake drum to the wheel.
Draw the brake drum forcefully towards you. Use a screwdriver and rubber mallet or a brake drum puller to take the drum off of the wheel if you are unable to remove the drum. First step in what we are going to do is you have to start on the back side of the backing plate.
In our case we are going to have to flip it over but go behind your axle and take off this cap for the adjuster and this adjuster here you will want to spin it down as close as possible so it takes out a lot of the tension. Remove the rubber grommet which will give us access to adjust the automatic adjuster. Two screwdrivers are needed insert the first screwdriver into the hole push back the lock.
Take the standard screwdriver and rotate the star wheel. Finally you can remove the drum. If you want to deactivate the hydraulic brakes on your boat trailer you can certainly do so.
The simplest way to do this would be to drain the brake fluid from the lines by disconnecting the brake lines from the wheel cylinders and allowing the fluid to drain. Nov 7 2010 at 158am. I would have thought a socket would have been better than a spanner a gentle tap all round with a hammer some WD40.
If it doesnt have to be done today most tyre places would probably help. Just be careful you dont take the corners off the nut. If you have a buildup of brake dust the best way to remove it is to wipe it away with a cloth.
Now the drum is free from the trailer check its condition. The drum should be replaced if there are deep score marks around the inside. The next step is to remove the brake cables.
For a detailed guide on brake cable replacement please see here. Lay the brake drum on a workbench and remove the grease seal and inner bearing from the back of the drum using a screwdriver. Remove the inner and outer races from the drum using a large drift punch and hammer.
Prepare the new drum brake. Many drums will become coated in a thin oily film to prevent them from rusting during shipping and storage. If that is the case be sure to liberally spray the drums with brake cleaner to remove any of the film that may be present before installing them.
Install the drum brake over the brake shoes. Once the drum is clean and ready to install slip it over the brake. As to availability of drum brake linings.
I have a few Chryslers from the late 1960s to early 1970s. These cars have 11 drum brakes front and rear. The fronts usually were 30 wide but depending upon drum width could also be 275 and 25 wide linings.
As time progresses purchasing 30 linings is becoming more difficult. Take the brake wheel off and set it to the side. Detach the brake drum.
Locate this and the keeper bolt in the vehicles manual. Turn the keeper bolt counterclockwise with a lug wrench. Take the brake drum off and set it to the side.
Put a drain pan under the brake system. Detach the wheel cylinder. When the drawbar contracts a set of Bowden brake cables are pulled and activate the brake drums to the axles the higher the pushing force the increased braking force.
When the car stops braking the cables are deactivated and the trailer tows as normal. If you have a tandem trailer pull the breakaway pin then with the aid of a compass check north or south on all drums. You will notice some drums are south and some drums are north.
Changing positive and negative will cause polarity on the magnets to be reversed. This test alone does not prove polarisation. Drums that are partially polarised will not exhibit big braking improvements.
You dont want to have any grease on your trailer brakes. Make sure you are careful. Take the towels or paper towels and constantly wipe them.
Return the rubber dust jacket to its original position. Place the jacket in the hole by pushing in the center. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 about 10 times to break in your new drum brakes.
After the last cycle drive on the highway at a cruising speed and avoid applying your brakes as much as possible to allow the brakes to cool down. This takes about five minutes. Repeat one more break-in cycle after the brakes cool down following Steps 1 through 3.
Spin your trailers wheel or drum you can do it with the wheel on or off and while its spinning place your screwdriver or adjustment spoon on one of the ridges. Start moving the tool up so that the adjusters teeth are moving away from you.
