How often should gimbal bearing be replaced. Now if you service your outdrive every year remove it to grease ujoints and do a general check if your ujoints are serviceable then you simply stick two fingers through the bearing and feel it. If it is not smooth then replace it. The gimbal bearing is in the gimbal housing bolted directly to the transom if all transoms were perfectly perpendicular to the engine coupler you would not need a gimbal.
Since different boats have different transom angles other than 90 degrees to the coupler the driveshaft support bearing inside of the gimbal bearing has to change its angle to allow the driveshaft to pass through directly. How often should you grease gimbal bearing. 5-10 pumps is sufficient.
If the bearing ever gets wet all ya have to do is wet it once and it fails. I would pump the u-joints with grease and the gimbal bearing with plenty of grease. The drive should be removed every season for inspection and greasing.

The U-joints could also be causing a growl when turning. Id have the U-joints and gimbal bearing replaced at the same time U-joints are relatively cheap and as stated the drive is already off so there shouldnt be much additional labor involved. A bad gimbal bearing will make noise anytime engine is running.
If you were experiencing noise all of the time and its rather high pitched getting worse by the minute I would bet you have bad bearings in the lower unit. When these are bad they will make noise anytime you are in gear. After seeing milky oil it should have been torn down.
