I am trying to change the water pump on my 1986 Evinrude 4HP outboard motor and I cannot figure out how to disconnect the shift rod so that I can drop the lower unit. Evinrude Lightwin Water Pump Housing.

Where can i get a free 1996. Install the seal atop the water pump housing with the lips of the seal facing toward the impeller. Lightly coat the inner surface of the water tube grommet with white marine grease and fit the O-ring onto the large bore atop the water pump housing and the grommet to the water tube.
Unscrew that and pour water through that untill it overflows tell someone to standby the switch as soon as the water overflows press the hole with your hand and tell the person to turn the switch on if you are afraid of preesing your hand against the hole put the nut but dont tight it much the pump should start pumping. Position the seal on the top of the pump housing with its lips facing toward the impeller. Apply gasket sealing compound to the O-ring for the impeller housing the outer rim of the water tube grommet.
Insert the O-ring onto the large round opening atop the water pump housing and insert the grommet on the smaller round opening atop the housing. Pull the lower unit down and free of the upper case. Use a socket to remove the two or three bolts on the top of the impeller casing and pull the casing up over the drive shaft. Flip the impeller casing over. Note the position of the plastic key then remove and replace it.
Clean the water pump key area. Use emery cloth to clean up the shaft if necessary. Remove the water pump tube screw.
Remove existing gasket compound from the lower unit. Mix the new gasket sealing compound well. Clean the water pump surface area of the lower unit.
