Grab the leading edge with a pair of needle nose pliers and twist it COUNTER clockwise. That will cause the insert to collapse in on itself and come loose from the threads. To get old ones out I made a removal tool like the one helicoil sells and it worked fine and didnt botch up the threads in the aluminum.

To check the tapped hole you should be able to remove the old heli-coil and look at the threads a magnifying glass or loupe will show you if the threads still have peaks and valleys VVVVVV.
