To remove them you can use a rubber mallet and tap downward on the end to get them loose. Then you could probably just pull it off by hand. There are also some that thread on and you would turn it counter clockwise to remove it if it is the type that threads onoff.
I have had some luck heating the cap with a hair dryer. The heat should make the cap more pliable. If you cannot get the cap off by hand you will need a pair of pliers.
