This could be due to the components of the differentials not being lubricated properly. One get under and check the diff it might say something about it being lsd secondly if you get the rear end up turn one wheel and if the other spins the same way you have lsd if it spins opposite its not.
When internal discs wear it starts to behave more like an open or standard differential.
How to tell if limited slip differential is bad. Whining noises are one of the most common and noticeable symptoms of a bad differential. In a limited-slip differential engine torque is distributed evenly to each wheel on the axle. Use an automotive jack to raise one side of your automobiles rear wheels.
Limited Slip Symptoms A traditional clutch-type differential will lose its ability to transfer power to the slower spinning wheel essentially turning it back into a standard open differential. Once the fluid wears out the differential will progressively fail to transfer power while cruising or turning. Use only the manufacturers recommended fluid when servicing a limited-slip differential.
Servicing with the wrong type of fluid results in vibration and chatter. When internal discs wear it starts to behave more like an open or standard differential. A differential can be overhauled and the disc packs replaced.
Turn the tire on one of the lifted wheels slowly. Use your hand to turn the tire. If the differential is limited slip the wheel will be difficult to turn.
If the differential is an open differential–also known as a conventional differential–the wheel will turn freely. Whining noises are one of the most common and noticeable symptoms of a bad differential. This could be due to the components of the differentials not being lubricated properly.
Perhaps the differentials are leaking fluid and that is causing them to wear prematurely. The bottom right is the ELSD you can see the electric motor that pressurizes the clutch pack in the differential. Its an ELSD not an LSD small difference and arguably still an LSD but a traditional LSD has preset pressure on its clutch packs and that creates drawbacks.
Two ways to check. One get under and check the diff it might say something about it being lsd secondly if you get the rear end up turn one wheel and if the other spins the same way you have lsd if it spins opposite its not. I think depending on what yearand auto or manual most 325s came with a 315 diff with a 25 lsd.
The result is the One Wheel Peel. The clutches are what lock the axles together. If they go bad your limited slip differential becomes an open differential.
No damage to the car just a loss of available traction in some driving conditions. Given dealer labor rates I would bet 500 repair from Ford or 300 from a local shop. Jack up the rear of the vehicle.
With the hand brake off and out of gear spin one wheel by hand. If the wheel on the opposite side spins the same way then you have a Limited Slip Differential LSD assuming the differential is of course working. If the opposing wheel spins in the opposite direction then you have a Standard or Open differential.
If your vehicle has a Limited Slip Differential it will be noted as Limited Slip. The instructions below will walk you through the steps. Step 1 - Locate the axle code.
Locate the Safety Compliance Certification Label on the drivers side front or rear door panel. Find the word AXLE under the bar code. Find the two-digit code under AXLE.
Clunking and banging noises on the corners can be due to lack of sufficient posi-traction lubrication broken spider gears or worn posi-traction or limited-slip clutches. Broken spider gears moreover can also immobilize the differential and create a loud crunching sound during final departure. Just a quick video on how to check for a limited slip diff by simply jacking up your vehicle.
Thanks for watching a please subscribe. A burning smell from your differential or gearbox is another sign you need near differential oil. The smell may be coming from oil leaking out of an old seal you may even notice a reddish stain under your cars parking spot.
The burning smell might also be. A limited slip differential will not be a terribly costly upgrade to make on your vehicle if one is available. For those that upgrade to a limited slip diff most spend somewhere in the range of 600 and 1200 to get this done which is not a lot if you think about it.
Disadvantages of a Limited Slip Differential 1 Lack of Full Power to Wheels. Limited slip is much different than a locker. Limited slip often doesnt work as well as you hope it will.
Lockers are more mechanical almost like a ratchet. Limited slip used more of a clutch. Changing the fluid and having it checked is about the only way to know if its working up to spec.
Ford is not known to have great limited slip. If QD2 is working correctly the wheel off the ground give it a little time 5-10 seconds should be turning at or around the same speed as the tire on the ground. If the tire in the air is speeding much faster than the tire on the ground then ur QD2 is not working properly.
Rinse and repeat with tire. Spin one of the tires with your hand. If the opposite tire spins in the same direction you have a limited slip differential.

Does that mean that I dont have the Limited Slip. I have 75K miles on her so plan on changing diff oil in the future. 3 Sep 9 2012.
A 4x4 with open diffs is little different than a 4x2 with a locker. I would suggest a true locker vs posi or limited slip as they are just that. A locker in the rear whether automatic or selectable will give you three drive wheels which can get you out of.
Limited-Slip Differential Benefits and Drawbacks. A limited-slip differential has many advantages compared to an open differential with just a few downsides. Limited-slip differentials allow drivers to put down.
